Martie is a sixth generation Texan who grew up on a wheat farm outside a small West Texas town, renowned for having the world’s littlest skyscraper. As a child, she quickly learned the value of Estate Planning after watching family friends' farms being broken up and sold after they unexpectedly qualified for the Federal Estate Tax. After an otherwise idyllic childhood, she went to the University of Texas at Dallas, where she graduated in 2007, Cum Laude, with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. While earning her degree, Martie participated in Moot Court and co-founded the University’s first Mock Trial team. After completing her education a year early, she moved to Washington, D.C., as a Fellow in the Bill Archer Fellowship Program with the University of Texas.
After graduating, Martie stayed in Washington, D.C. to work as a Legislative Assistant for Congressman Joe Barton (TX-06), Ranking Member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Her legislative responsibilities focused on judiciary, tax, finance, business, and agricultural policy. She continued working with farmers and small business owners, becoming a passionate advocate for repeal of the Estate Tax. She remained heavily involved in the Texas Exes and the Archer Program. After falling in love with Rock Hill native Wes Climer, Martie moved to Rock Hill, where she had three children while commuting to the University of South Carolina School of Law. Martie received her Juris Doctorate in 2014, graduating Cum Laude.
Her husband, Wes Climer, works with Wells Fargo in Charlotte, NC. They are members of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Rock Hill and have three children: Jack (4), Monroe (2), and Betsy (1). Although Martie remains convinced that Texas is the best country in the world, she loves South Carolina and has decided that it is most assuredly the best state in the Union.
